Top of Europe: The Swiss tour

11 Apr 2016

Switzerland. The heaven on earth with snow capped mountains, gorgeous lakes, chocolate, cheese, nature that won't let you sit inside and not to mention the extremely high quality of living, education, culture and diversity, and not least of all, Roger Federer. It's as close to perfection a country can get.

Me at Jungfrau

I did visit Switzerland a few years ago for 2 days. It was during the World cup of 2014 (held in Brazil). I only remember watching a bunch of games with some extremely friendly Sri Lankan origin Swiss people and visiting a couple of places in Zurich. A return was required and this time we made a plan for 5 glorious days.

All places are accessible through public transport (mostly train) and the trains are quite beautiful with impeccable punctuality. You just need to get a pass beforehand and it's smooth sailing.

Jungfrau

Jungfrau

Jungfraujoch is one of the highest point in Europe with its peak at 3463m. There is a train line from Kleine Scheidegg in the Bernese Oberland. It's quite the ride and not to be missed if you are in the vicinity. Towards the top end, it does feel a bit dizzy due to slightly low Oxygen levels. This was definitely the highlight of the trip. A bunch of pictures below from Jungfrau as well as neigbouring Grindewald, Lauterbrunnen and Kleine Scheidegg.

We'll start with some scenic views around Jungfrau.

Glacier Express

The Glacier express in Switzerland covers the most scenic railway line. The Glacier Express is a regular scheduled train between Zermatt at the foot of the Matterhorn and St Moritz in the Engadin skiing area. These trains sport a large window just for the view (similar to Vistadome train in Karnataka). We took part in a section of the journey as the full trip is pretty long. Some images below.

Bern

We visited the Blausee lake among other places in Interlaken. A few pictures below.

Lucerne

The visit to Mt. Pilatus via cable car is quite the ride. This is one to try for sure.

Our flight out was from Zurich. But we did visit Rhine falls (about an hour from Zurich) and lake Zurich. The pictures follow.

As Federer said, "the flag is a big plus" - this trip was definitely a big plus. With so much beauty all around, and such great organisation in almost everything, you'll never be disappointed roaming around Switzerland.
